“The Gang” – A Poker Game That’ll Steal Your Game Night

So here’s a weird one that totally blindsided me, in a good way. It’s called The Gang, and on paper it sounds like a weird mashup of poker, deduction, and co-op chaos. But I picked it up on a whim and played it for the first time yesterday, and by the third game the whole table was all-in.

Here’s the pitch: You and your crew are pulling off a series of bank heists. To crack the vault, your team has to line up your poker hands in perfect order, from weakest to strongest. The catch? You don’t know exactly how strong your hand is. You’re flying half-blind and just hoping your read on the table (and your teammates) is right.

Keep going for more info and pics. You wont be disappointed.

The gameplay’s wild. Everyone gets dealt two hole cards, classic Texas Hold’em style. But instead of betting, there’s a central pool of poker chips, numbered from 1 up to the number of players. Once the cards are dealt, anyone can grab a chip at any time. No turns, just grab one when you're confident. The chip you take signals to the rest of the gang how strong you think your hand is. Got a pitiful 2 and 3? Probably best to grab the “1” chip. Pocket aces? Go big or go home.

The twist? You can steal chips from other players if you think they grabbed the wrong one. Yeah, it’s a co-op game, but you can absolutely lift someone else’s chip if you’re convinced they don't know what they're doing. And honestly? Sometimes they don't. Sometimes you don't. That’s the fun.

As the community cards are revealed, the flop, turn, and river, you keep adjusting,  grabbing a new chip from the next set each round based on how your hand’s looking now. At the end, you reveal your cards in chip order. If the hands line up properly from weakest to strongest, you crack the vault. If not, the alarm sounds. Three vaults and you win. Three alarms and the crew’s done.

Now here’s where it gets even better. Every time you mess up and trigger an alarm, your crew gets a Specialist card. These are little boosts. Special abilities that help tilt the odds back in your favor on the next run. On the flip side, if you successfully crack a vault, you draw a Challenge card instead. These add twists or restrictions that make the next heist a bit harder. It’s a smart way to keep each round feeling different without adding a ton of extra rules.

I’m not gonna lie, we got way into it. We threw on the Ocean’s 11 soundtrack to set the mood, and suddenly it felt like we were sitting in some high-roller casino, whispering secret signals across the felt. Half the table’s making confident plays, the other half is second guessing everything, and someone always ends up stealing a chip at the last second that they absolutely should not have touched.

There was one round where the same chip got stolen probably four times in a row. Everyone was convinced they had the worst hand at the table. We were so confident. And then the river hit, we revealed the cards, and… it was a disaster. Totally out of order. Alarm triggered. We all just looked at each other like, “Welp. That’s on us.”

That’s what makes it great though. It’s tense in the best way. You’re not just trying to figure out your hand, you’re trying to read everyone else’s confidence level, second-guess their moves, and manage the chaos of simultaneous decisions.

It’s a clever blend of poker psychology, groupthink, and “oh no, I definitely made that worse” energy. You’re constantly second guessing your own instincts and trying to read everyone else. And when someone flips a full house right after stealing the "3" chip from you, yeah, chaos erupts.

We played it three times in a row, and probably would have played it for the rest of the night if I hadn't been adamant about getting one of my shelf of shame games to the table that night. Super quick to learn, plays fast, and it feels different than anything else on the shelf right now. Perfect for game nights where you want to yell across the table, cheer when a plan works, and blame your friends when it doesn't.

Anyway, if you’re into deduction, poker vibes, and yelling “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!” in a room full of laughter, The Gang is worth checking out. You can get it here from Amazon on the cheap.
